Team line ups Whitehouse,
Partridge, Harris, Evans, Charlwood, Thompson and Clayton
With a delayed kick-off from the
previous game the Westbury boys were kept waiting an extra 15
minutes, whilst the parents had to endure an extra 15 minutes of
gale force winds.
Thompson and Clayton got the game
underway and between them, worked the ball up to the Evesham
penalty area where Thompson hit just wide with barely 10 seconds on
the clock. The next couple of minutes both teams settled in and it
was Westbury looking the sharpest with the likes of Charlwood and
Evans first to the ball in their respected battles and finding their
team mates with some crisp passing.
With 3 minutes on the clock Alfie
Whitehouse used the wind to good advantage and punted a long ball up
to the edge of the Evesham penalty area where Clayton took one touch
to knock the ball out of his feet and hit the ball cleanly to put
the home team 1-0 up. From the resulting kick off Clayton pressed
the Evesham strikers and one back possession, the ball was then
passed back to partridge who calmly laid it off to Harris who in
turn picked out the run of Clayton, Clayton then ran the ball into
the corner of the Evesham half where Thompson offered support,
passed the defender and picked out the run of captain of the day
Harry Charlwood who calmly slotted the ball home with confidence.
Again the work rate was good by the whole team, and good work
between defensive duo partridge and Harris, broke down the attack of
the visitors.
Westbury were looking sharp on the
break and with the pace and determination of Evans breaking down the
wing, he made it easy for Thompson to pick him out with a little
layoff, Evans then continued his run with the ball and hit a low
hard shot to beat the advancing keeper to bag his first league goal
for Westbury.
Whitehouse, Partridge and Harris were in confident mood, holding
their positions well, which was allowing Charlwood a little more
time on the ball to get his head up and pick out the advancing run
of Thompson to the right of him, Thompson then went on to run down
the right wing, cut inside the defence and unleash a shot that the
keeper could only help into his goal on his near post.
Although 4 goals down the Evesham
boys never let their heads drop and forced a free kick on the edge
of the Westbury box. Whitehouse was very vocal and organised his
players well, he then went on to save the set piece but the power of
the shot stopped him from holding onto it and the ball was on its
way to cross the line until Partridge cleared superbly.
Sub-Brown on for Harris
Brown took no time in settling in
and began to form some great link up play with the midfield trio
Charlwood, Thompson and Evans. And it was this link up that saw
Evans break swiftly down the left side and have a shot deflected
wide. Clayton has worked really hard in training and previous games
this season on pressing the ball from the goal kicks, and from the
resulting goal kick got his rewards when he won the ball and hit an
early shot to claim his second of the game. The next five minutes
were very evenly matched but it was good to see the boys still
concentrating and doing what was asked of them. The concentration
payed off when Tai brown hit a great pass to Thompson who beat his
marker and slid in a great ball for Haydon Clayton who calmly
slotted the ball under the keeper’s body and celebrate his hat
trick.
Half time- Westbury Celtic Youth
6 – 0 Evesham United Robins
The opening five minutes were
played out in the centre of the park and both sets of players showed
great signs of effort and determination, Evesham trying to get back
into the game whilst Westbury trying to keep a clean sheet.
Sub- Harris on for Charlwood
With Harris dropping back into
defence it gave partridge the chance of a run in midfield, and it
was partridge that played a great ball out wide to Thompson who ran
down the wing a whipped in a great cross that was headed just wide
by the advancing Clayton. It was Thompson again causing the Evesham
players problems, this time setting up partridge, who hit a fierce
shot but the keeper saved well. This time Thompson decided to go it
alone and when he received a great pass from partridge he managed to
go between the two Evesham defenders and slot the ball home for
Westbury’s 7th of the match.
Sub Charlwood on for Thompson
The next five minutes were spent in
the Evesham half with brown, Evans and partridge all going close and
it was brown who was smiling after a clever one/two with Clayton saw
the strong midfielder collect the return pass and power a shot down
the middle of the Evesham goal.
Ryan Harris was playing as a lone
defender and was fantastic when called upon, reading the game very
well and always looking to play safe until backup in the shape of
Charlwood, Brown and Evans arrived, partridge was quite happy to let
the other three work back as the boy has spent the last 2 seasons
for a chance in midfield and get a goal so the management decided to
leave him up along with Clayton.
Sub –Thompson on for Evans
With the game pretty much won the
management changed things a little and played a few players in
unfamiliar roles and the football wasn’t quite what it could be (if
you don’t experiment then you never know) however there were some
positives to come out of it and it gave both me and Steve an idea of
what the players can do when called upon. But it was Clayton and
Thompson who linked up well again and when Clayton made his run,
Thompson slipped in a well timed pass so Clayton could hit the ball
in his stride and thump one across the keeper to take his tally this
game to 4 and Westbury’s to 9.
M.O.M. Harry Charlwood.
Another impressive display Harry. Defended well, aware of the
players around you and capped the game off with a goal.
Management thoughts...
Although the report mainly highlights the attacking players it was
a great achievement by Whitehouse, Harris, partridge, Brown and
Charlwood working hard to keep a clean sheet whilst Thompson, Evans
and Clayton worked very hard to create, setup and finish the
chances. But we were happiest with the sportsmanship you showed
throughout the game and at the final whistle. This result was always
going to happen sooner or later and it was unfortunate for Evesham
they caught you boys on top of your game, well done to you all. |
