20th March 2010

Team:  Howl, McNab, Woodland, Middleton, Hood, Russell, Sinclair

Subs: Lister

Only one sub today, Olver is away on his fortnightly trip down south, and Price picked up a freak basketball finger injury!

Evesham got things going and straight away you can tell they are a well-organised side, passing the ball confidently and accurately. This passing and moving won them a free kick just outside the box, but the wall did its job, and blocked the shot. Russell back defending cleared the blocked shot. Westbury look a little apprehensive, and nervous which is coming out in the football they are playing, whenever they have ball they are giving it away to easily.

Sinclair and Russell are back defending well to break down another Evesham attack. Hood got the ball out to Russell who combined with Middleton as they both attacked on the wing, cut inside crossed to Sinclair who was closed down very quickly, but encouraging signs. McNab was called upon in defence and coped superbly, laying the ball to Russell down the line, who managed to cut inside again and get a shot off but not enough power on it. This passage of Westbury attack had pulled some players out of position and Evesham exploited that, with some very neat and accurate passing, which left a player unmarked and one on one with Howl 1 – 0.

From the re start Westbury got the ball out to the wing and Russell got round the Evesham defender crossed to Middleton, who just couldn’t get the ball out from under his feet for the shot, the Evesham clearance was brought under control by Woodland and again out to Russell, got his shot off but was well covered by the keeper. Again, like the first goal Evesham broke, the striker was free again but an excellent save from Howl denied him a goal.

With the 1st half having flown by the lads can be pleased with score line, as they have had good chances, but they seemed to switch off in the dying seconds as Evesham broke and the Westbury defence was left chasing back, but even Hood and Woodlands efforts could not prevent a second goal 2 - 0

Half Time 2 - 0

Only change for the start of the second half Lister on Middleton off, which meant Sinclair became the loan striker. After the half time team talk, which could be heard from the sidelines, the lads looked ready to get going. Lister was pitched against the tall Evesham player, but was soon aware that Lister was overawed by the size difference with a crunching but fair tackle, the loose ball was picked up by Hood and sent up to Sinclair who forced a Westbury corner early on. The ball was sent in, Russell picked up the knock down, out wide to Sinclair, crossed to Lister just wide. Evesham again on the break, with McNab having to cope with two fast strikers, 3 – 0, Howl tried by diving to his right but the shot was too good. Westbury pressed again, not giving up in the search for a goal and Lister forced a corner. Hood sent in a great ball but we didn’t make the most of the opportunity, and Evesham cleared the ball up field.

Russell is still working hard trying everything he can to get space, a great bit of play down the wing with Sinclair, and never gave up getting stuck into the Evesham defender, well done. Lister on the opposite wing turned the Evesham player, gave himself half a yard, squared the ball to Sinclair, but the Evesham keeper was out like a flash and jumped on the ball. Lister again was involved after getting the keepers shot under control, this time supported by Russell, who got his shot off and the keeper was forced to make a great save who gave away a corner.

The game is drawing to a close with much of the play being in the middle of park, Evesham have slowed the game down happy to sit on the 3 goal lead, then the handy Evesham striker saw Howl was off his line, and a hit and hope found its way in the back of the net 4 – 0.  The score line stayed the same till the ref blew for full time

Full Time: 4 - 0

MOTM:  Lister - Came on from the sub bench and got stuck into the opposition straight away, determination and commitment won him the MOTM award, well done, more of the same for the next match.

This was always going to be a tough game; it looks like Evesham will be unbeaten for the whole season, however this display was worlds apart from the first time these two met. I think the mental side got to the team a little today, but they get a chance to put things right next week as games are thick and fast in the run in to the end of the season

Managers’ Comments

Whilst the report tries to provide a positive view of the game, the overall performance was a little disappointing, you seemed to have lost the game before a ball was kicked, understandable from the last time we played Evesham but you seemed to forget the great football you have played and improvements in your game that have taken place since we last played them. Next time have more belief, play to the usual standard and type of football you normally do and I am positive that you will achieve the result.

Man of the Match, whilst several players tried to lift themselves, only one managed to overcome their fears and rise to the challenge, Lister displayed great determination and produced a gutsy performance, well done.
