First home game for the Juniors, who after an impressive display last week, are looking to build on that and turn the home ground into a fortress, well it sounded good on paper!  We are up against a team new to us, as Newtown has split into two teams,  both in our league and the team scouts had not been able to work out what the split was, 50 / 50 , an A and B, so we would have to work out that as the game progressed.

The team are light on players, both Josh O and Josh S, still away on international duty, so we have one sub and 20 minutes a side, I predict a few tired legs at the end of the game!

The game got underway in again near perfect footballing conditions, straight away Newtown pressed forward with plenty of bodies, but the attempted through ball was cut out by the defensive due of Joe P and Ben W, who after a great showing last week have been kept together, and are working as a solid defensive unit.  The ball was played through Josh H who is looking solid in the middle of the park again, a quick ball to Will R who managed to lose the Newtown defender and struck his shot cleanly straight in the face of the Newtown keeper, most of the supporters on both sides turned away and winced, to his credit straight up on his feet ready for the next attack, well done keeper.  Newtown are keeping 2 attackers up front and they are trying to spring them free, but Joe P is having a storming game, anything coming near him either from the air or the ground is expertly dealt with.  Westbury went on the attack again  through Cam L on the wing the cross into the box was not dealt with and Josh H put his foot cleanly through the ball whiskers’ wide.  Westbury are the dominant side, but murmurings from the top tier of the stands where filtering through the crown hoping that this wouldn’t be another one of those games!

Sub Fraser M on for Sam M, who being the loan striker had a good game but nothing would fall for him.  Fraser M looked full of life as he bounded on the pitch looking to continue his excellent form he showed last week.  Again Ben W and Joe P mopped up anything that came towards them, a quick ball down the line from Cam L to Fraser M who shot directly at the keeper, with such force he couldn’t hold the deflection landed at Cam L who slotted it under the keeper with his left foot.  GGGGGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL

It was well deserved as the team as a whole where easily the stronger side and a goal was deserved, Cam L ran straight over to Fraser M to give him a high 5 to acknowledge the shot which started the goal.  Now normally at this point the other team go and score straight away, not this time, Will R had the bit between his teeth and was pressuring down the wing some excellent runs, the defensive duo are doing so well the rest of the team have the confidence to attack, everyone involved, again Josh H is commanding the central midfield position, putting in strong challenges and lovely well weighted layoffs.  As the 1st half cam to a close Westbury are peppering the Newtown goal, everyone involved with shots  I have lost count of the number of corners we had have.

Half Time 1 – 0

Subs for the second half, Cam L who was studded after a challenge in the 1st half off and Sam M back on ready to attack.  Westbury started where they left off and are playing with confidence.  Joe P again rock solid in defence had a long ball that split the Newtown defence, straight to Sam M who was closed down just as he got his shot off.  Again Newtown are going for the big attackers way up front, which would work if the ball could get through to them but nothing was again a clearance / through ball from Joe P put Sam M one on one with the keeper, who came out and forced Sam M wide, for a corner.  Westbury had a succession of corners easily into double figures, Ben W who was now in the box for corners had a shot off the post, Will R forced a succession of excellent saves from the keeper, I think Will R must have lost his rabbits foot, as it was just not happening for him today in front of goal.  On a Rare Newtown attack Jake who we have not mentioned easily dealt with it, Jake was not having a lot to do but when he has been called upon he was superb, some of his positioning and reactions where excellent, when you are not kept busy you can lose your focus and concentration, but Jake H was having none of that.

Again Will R is running his legs off with lovely skill from Josh H to pick him out on the wing.  Will R put so much effort he had no more to give and a change was made Will R off Cam L back on, excellent game Will R worked tirelessly.  Westbury had another corner, this time taken by Cam L with forced the Newtown defender to head clear, very close to his own goal.  The resulting corner after being half cleared fell to Ben W who with a Shearer esq strike from 15 / 20 yard out hit a screamer in the bottom corner of the goal, what a goal and again well deserved. 2 – 0.

The last few minutes again saw corner after corner for Westbury and everyone involved, and having shot, Fraser M had a tap in hit the post Sam M had  two chances again I’m sure the goal moved, don’t worry Sam M it was not your day today, but it will be in another game.

The whistle blew for full time, and the dancing started in the stands, first home and well deserved.

Full Time 2 - 0

MOTM – Ben W, who was almost pipped to it by Joe P

We will face stronger opposition that’s for sure, but the work rate and commitment mean that the team could do well this season, well done to each and everyone of them.
