First game of the new season, new players, Frasier / Josh S, I know another Josh! This will start to get confusing!  We are now playing 20 minutes a side, so fitness and concentration will be key.  After a couple of friendly’s one with a dubious penalty (Charlwood) the travelling supporters where nervous, especially as last season we think this team was in the 1st division, and we all know that relegated teams  (unlike West Brom) can be dangerous!!

I was a perfect footballing morning, bright not too warm,  as we all settled into out seats the game got underway, nerves jingling finger nails being bitten.  Westbury started brightly, the usual solid defender Ben Woodland was on the bench, he needed a very urgent call of nature, I’ll say no more on that! But new signing Frasier was coping excellently and looked to have put his nerves to one side and was defending superbly, well done Frasier.  On the wing Josh O was starting where he left off last season, running at the opposition and looking to spring Sam and Will free.  As the half went on it was tight but Westbury defiantly looking the attacking side, Will Russell working hard on the wing and chasing down all the through balls but they are just a little too heavy.  Oldbury attacks are limited to Bolton style long ball hoofs from the keeper, every time Joe price, who was having a great game, the attackers where twice his size but like the terrier he is never gave up and was getting the ball 9 times out of 10 and laying it up to the midfield, and Frasier who took control either with confident pass outs to the line or back to Jake in goal, who is commanding his area superbly.

Again I was an Oldbury long ball to the wing and an unfortunate bounce that put the attacker through, Jake in goal made himself big and blocked the shot, great goal keeping.  Josh Olver was brought off and Cameron L brought on, Josh had a great 10 / 15 mins especially remember he broke his arm in the summer!  Again Westbury pressed using Josh H as the feeder to the wings, in fact most thing in the midfield went through Josh H who was having a strong game.  Sam M who was chasing down the through balls and a new found strength was swapped for our other new signing Josh S.  I was a Josh H ball down the wing for Cameron to chase, that lead to  the cross being deflected  for a corner, which started a succession of 4 or 5 corners, we are peppering the Oldbury goal but nothing is getting through, credit to the Oldbury keeper he is having a great game.

Half Time 0 – 0

Westbury played some wonderful football at times, pass and move was in full effect along with a never give up attitude.

No change in line up for Westbury in the second half Oldbury started the second half brightly pushing hard, but again they had to resort to long balls as the Westbury defence of  Oldbury pressed down the wing and forced a corner, the first one was expertly dealt with by Ben W who came on for Joe P, the second was a scramble, it bounced of what seamed like 4 knees, 2 chests I think a couple of heads, nobody could get in under control until the Oldbury attacker toe poked it above the hand of Jake. 1 – 0 completely against the run of play.

This against the run of play goal really stirred the team up and what followed was wave upon wave of attacks, using both wings, Will Russell was working his boots off down the flank, along with Cameron who’s hold up play was good just needed the final killer ball, everyone was involved from defence to attack with shots on goal, it was looking more and more like this wasn’t going to be Westbury’s day, as in the first half credit to the Oldbury keeper he was having a storming game.  Sam M broke from a Will R through ball one on one with the keeper, somehow it was managed to be saved!  Fraiser was swapped for Josh O, he had an excellent first game to a warm round of applause, an excellent game.

In the final minutes again Westbury kept pressing looking for the elusive goal, but it wasn’t to be, the whistle blew full time, a loss but a really the better team lost.

Full Time 0 - 1

All the players commitment was fantastic, work rate was great, and togetherness, they looked like a team working for each other, if we continue like this we will have no problems. All the players deserved a player rating of 10,

The referee said after the game that it was one of the most enjoyable games he had taken, and that the football on display was excellent
