Away at Oldbury Park Tigers

Oldbury Park Tigers 2 Westbury Celtic Youth 2

The first ever league game for the Under 9 Youth team was away to Oldbury Park Tigers (who won their first match last week 5-0!).  The boys started well with some good passing in midfield and seemed to dominate play with confidence and had some early chances.  Oldbury Park broke from defence with a good goal clearance which caught us by surprise and gave Oldbury Park a 1-0 lead.   The team didn’t let the goal get them down and battled hard with Francesco and Harry Stokes defending well under some pressure from the opposition.

Half time saw a team talk from Mick and Gez which boosted the confidence of the boys to keep play simple and pass and move just like training.  Midfield worked hard to break down Oldbury Park’s defence and a simple ball from Alistair found the feet of Benjamin who had an easy tap in to draw level.

With the opposition goalkeeper being able to clear the ball deep into our end the defence stopped talking to each other which led to a mix up and a second goal.

Westbury dug deep and showed real guts, determination and a hunger to win.  They didn’t let the goal get them down and battled for every ball and started to play the ball through the gaps and with a fantastic cross from Charlie W, Benjamin took a volley on the rise hitting it hard and high! The keeper made a sensational save to push the ball onto the crossbar to deny Westbury the equaliser!

Still, the midfield and defence battled hard against a very good side with Francesco making some key challenges to stop Oldbury Park.  With time ticking on Francesco picked the ball up on half way, played the ball to Ben K who moved the ball forward and passed into the box for Charlie W to put in the back of the net.  Levelling the game to 2-2!  Both teams battled hard in the closing minutes to try to win the game with Harry Staley making some crucial saves and Harry Stokes stopping crosses coming into our penalty area!  It was tense with Westbury getting chances to win the game in the dying minutes but the referee blew his whistle to give Westbury their first league point and a very well battled for 2-2 draw.  A very fair result.  Well done boys!!  And well done Francesco who was named Player of the Game by the referee. Next week we’re home to Wardon Village Jaguars.
